It’s July, and as the heat sets in, we’re taking a look at a classic design solution for keeping buildings cool: the courtyard.

Courtyards are one of the oldest spatial forms in architecture. Found across civilizations from Mesopotamian houses to Roman domus, Islamic sahn, and Chinese siheyuan. They serve both environmental and social functions. Despite some variations in form, the principle remains the same: an open void enclosed by built space.
