The site is in an old hamlet on the French Riviera, at the end of a narrow road, built around a spring that predates the nineteenth century. The main house, compact and symmetrical with terracotta tiles and a stone-framed entrance, was built less than forty years ago but reads as if it belongs to the older settlement. The brief was to extend it.
ELLENA MEHL Architects defined the project clearly before designing anything: this is a landscape project. The extension does not stand in front of the existing house or beside it as a legible addition. It sits between the house and the existing restanques, set within the terraced planes, redefining the intersection lines of the landscape rather than adding a new one.....… see more here
