Spaces for Art

Liljevalchs+ is a extension to Stockholm’s historic Liljevalchs Konsthall. A concrete volume topped by a large glass roof brings daylight deep into the interior, while a facade of crystal-clear glass elements subtly animates the exterior.

The new brick pavilion at Abby Kortrijk, designed by Barozzi Veiga with Tab Architects, introduces a contemporary element within the historic Groeninge Abbey complex. Its inclined, dark-brick facades is inspired by the verticality of the surrounding roofs while remaining clearly distinct. Positioned at the edge of Begijnhof Park, the pavilion reshapes the site’s public life by housing a bar and restaurant and opening the abbey toward the city.

The project introduces a long, gently curved canopy that reconnects the museum with its surrounding garden. Inspired by the Japanese concept of engawa, the ceramic-clad structure creates a sheltered, in-between space that is neither fully indoors nor outdoors.

Zaishui Art Museum stretches gently across a lake in Rizhao, forming a long, low structure that blurs the boundary between architecture and landscape. Columns rise from the water to support a thin, flowing roof, allowing the lake surface to extend into the interior and shape the spatial experience.

The Zayed National Museum is the new national museum of the UAE. Its form is defined by five lightweight steel wings that function as a natural ventilation system, drawing hot air upward while cooled air flows into the atrium. Inside, pod-shaped galleries, triple-laminated glazing, and electrochromic roof lights create a controlled environment for sensitive artefacts, while materials throughout the building bring in the warm-white tones of Saadiyat Island’s desert landscape.

UCCA Clay Museum is an art museum in Yixing that celebrates the city’s long ceramic tradition. Shaped like a mountain of pottery, the building draws inspiration from nearby Shushan Mountain and historic dragon kilns, with a carved shell roof supported by layered wooden lattice beams.

Simple Art Museum is a contemporary art museum in Anhui, China, that reinterprets traditional Hui-style architecture through a fluid, undulating roof and curved walls. Drawing inspiration from local gables, villages, and the nearby Nanfei River, the building creates a continuous spatial experience.

CORA is a timber workshop at IAAC’s Valldaura Labs, built inside a restored 19th-century brick structure in Collserola Natural Park to house a 6-axis industrial robot. The project brings together traditional craftsmanship and advanced digital fabrication, combining CNC-milled timber, skylights, and a green roof to create a functional space for research and making.
