The Ville-Marie Expressway runs underground through the center of Montreal, and for decades the scar it left on the surface was simply accepted. A sunken cut, a dead zone, a break between Old Montreal and downtown that pedestrians navigated around rather than through. Place des Montréalaises covers it.
Lemay won an international competition launched by the City of Montreal in 2017 with a concept built around stratification. The project does not merely deck over infrastructure; it transforms the deck into a tilted floating meadow that rises above street level.
Twenty-one plant species arranged in 86 planting clusters honor the 21 women the project commemorates: the 14 victims of the 1989 École Polytechnique femicide and seven Montreal pioneers. The naming is not incidental to the design.....… see more here
