Terra Nostra Park sits in the Furnas valley on the island of São Miguel in the Azores. It has been a beloved landmark since the late 18th century, when successive owners began expanding its grounds and planting its famous botanical collection. In 2019, the park’s current owner asked architects Pedro Maurício Borges and Paulo Lopes Vaz to design a set of new visitor facilities: a ticket office, a shop, and changing rooms for the park. The architects’ approach was clear from the start. The new buildings should feel like they belong to the garden, not stand out from it.
To guide the design, the architects looked at the park’s own history. They took cues from two existing structures on the grounds: the curved turret of the Casa do Parque and the rounded facade of the Casa do Jardineiro.
