Located in Machachi, Ecuador
At 3,403 metres, the páramo ecosystem has a specific quality: the sky is enormous and the horizon is mountains. The plot in Machachi, Ecuador, is elongated with access from a local road at one end, a ravine at the other, meadows and volcanoes on both sides. Taller General positioned the house at the highest point of the lot, tilted slightly into the slope, and opened it in all directions. The name is straightforward. La Miradora means the lookout.
Ten wooden ribs hold the house. Each portico is composed of four pieces that incline and converge upward, closing at the top to create the main shelter on the upper floor where most of life takes place. The ribs are set every 2.44 metres, generating large eaves that protect the timber from rain and the interior from direct sun. The module shifts once to support the altillo, a small loft above the main level, open north and south, positioned specifically to frame the nearest volcanoes.
The lower level is smaller, cut into the slope where the terrain allows it. The upper level holds the permanent living: kitchen, dining, living areas, the parents’ spaces.....… see more here
