As the colder season sets in and the winter solstice passes, interiors become places of shelter and comfort. In winter, we naturally seek spaces that feel familiar. Gabled roofs, warm materials like wood, stone, and leather, and soft light all contribute to this sense of ease. These spaces remind me of the idea, hygge, the Danish tradition of embracing coziness and well-being. Where soft textiles such as wool and linen, warm light, and elements like a fireplace create spaces that feel welcoming, intimate, and lived-in.
Timber Nest, designed by Quentin Desfarges, is a cabin in the Norwegian mountains designed for simple, essential living. Built entirely from solid timber, its small scale, thick wooden structure, and minimal program create a warm and protective interior suited to harsh winter conditions. Exposed pine surfaces and carefully framed views make the cabin feel intimate and comforting.
Calfuco Refuge is a compact wooden cabin near Valdivia, designed as a narrow, elevated volume set among the trees of the Valdivian rainforest. While the vertical form allows light in and views above the forest floor, Laurel wood surfaces and built-in furnishings give the interior a compact quality.
Built entirely from solid timber inside and out, the project draws on the idea of the primitive hut to create a warm, minimal retreat shaped by its alpine setting. Its reduced scale, natural materials, and fireplace-centered interior make the space feel intimate and quietly comforting.
The intersecting gabled roofs are shifted to open up the volume, allowing light to enter from multiple directions while framing views of the forest and lake. Cedar, oak, and maple surfaces throughout the interior enhance the sense of warmth, creating a quiet and comforting retreat among the trees.
Chestnut House, designed by João Mendes Ribeiro, is a small wooden shelter set beneath a mature chestnut tree in northern Portugal. Its compact size, simple geometry, and all-wood interior create a warm and intimate living space.
