Tainan is Taiwan’s oldest city, shaped by centuries of Dutch maritime trade, the Chinese Ming Dynasty, and a period of Japanese settlement in the early 20th century. Its streets are lined with temples, traditional shophouses, and carved wooden details that tell the story of a city with a long and layered past. When Mecanoo and MAYU Architects were tasked with designing a new public library for Tainan, that history became the starting point.
The result is a 37,000 sqm building that holds over a million books, a theatre, art galleries, a children’s library, roof gardens, and spaces for the community - all wrapped in a facade that speaks directly to the city around it.
The most immediate feature of the library is its inverted stepped form. Each floor cantilevers outward beyond the one below, supported by slender columns arranged in groups of four.
